CD-ROM   QUEENSLAND WAR MEMORIALS AND TRIBUTES

by Shirley & Trevor McIvor, 27 Maker Street, Toowoomba.  4350.   Phone/Fax  07 4635 4570.

Dedicated to Lt George Edward Jamieson, MC, Butler Medal, original ANZAC, 9th Battalion, AIF.

War memorials do not praise war, they honour people - possibly you or members of your family!  This CD-ROM is our personal endeavour to record visually the hundreds of tributes to young men and women who, in times of conflict, left their Queensland homes or came from interstate or overseas to train and serve in Queensland.  From large war memorials, the centre of remembrance each Anzac Day, to many personal and group tributes, each population centre has recorded its everlasting gratitude to those of you who served from or in their district and combined to ensure our priceless freedom.  As the Battle of the Coral Sea memorial on The Strand, Townsville, states:  It was our desire to leave a lasting memorial for future generations who may need to be reminded that freedom is often bought at a terrible cost.  That cost was paid by you if you are a veteran, and it is greatly appreciated.  Articles and photos by the McIvors also feature in the 1997 Anzac Day Commemoration Committee booklet and 1998 poster in Queensland schools, to help ensure our school children meet local veterans and share memories and experiences, which form Australia's living history and heritage.  Please use the CD-ROM as a basis for building a unique record of veterans' personal memoirs or wartime activities in your district.  There are 87 photos on www.abc.net.au/southqld  “War Memorials”, accompanying the text of segments played on Jenny Swan’s Drive Time from Toowoomba during 2002-2003.  Check   www.google.com    Shirley & Trevor McIvor    for further entries.

Our publication of Salute the Brave:  A Pictorial Record of Queensland War Memorials in 1994, triggered $10 million Operation Restoration to restore Australia's war memorials.  ISBN 0 949414 54 9.  (It is now only available from T & S McIvor, $25 post paid.)  It was then decided to prepare a more comprehensive CD-ROM, and this has been achieved by multimedia developer, Moonbase Enterprises Pty Ltd, a recognised world expert in CD-ROM production.  Whereas the book has 756 photographs, the CD-ROM contains 4763 colour/sepia photographs from 360 Queensland centres, plus 414 pages of text, an Art Gallery of 41 photos, 33 recorded verses/inscriptions, slide show, and music.  Names on all war memorials have been photographed.  Such is the coverage it could take 14 hours to view each photo for 10 seconds.  Photos may be viewed in alphabetical order of centres, or click on the map and see tributes/themes in regions.  To enable you to browse quietly, the photographs are also coded into 125 themes.  If you are interested in a particular theme of memorial you can view them as a batch.  Text can be printed/saved from the CD-ROM, which is Windows/Macintosh compatible.  There is much to see and appreciate and it is hoped young and old will view the tributes together, bridging any generation gap.  The intriguing categories are:
